St. Mary’s Church, Almeley
What’s on in the parish
The Bible remains the best selling book in the world. The reason is simple, and its teachings and guidance will take a lifetime to explore fully.
You are therefore warmly invited on alternate Wednesday evenings at 7.30 pm to the St. Mary home group.
The next gathering at the new venue will be on a date to be arranged at 7.30 at Church House, the home of Guy and Tessa Wilkinson.
For details of the discussion at the first meeting at Guy and Tessa’s house click here.
This little store of books is being used by lots of people. Please take time to come into church and you will be able to access the books in the North side of the nave.
Please take a book to read, or swap your book - all kinds of books available.
St. Mary’s Lottery
We all love St. Mary’s Church, which has been at the centre of our village community for at least 800 years, but unfortunately the cost of keeping the church going rises every year. As we all know, bills for such essentials as maintenance, heat, light, cleaning, insurance, mowing the churchyard and so on are always increasing. In this coming year we will need to install a new central heating boiler.
In addition to organizing fund-raising events, we need to raise more money on a regular basis and, as many other organisations do, we set up a Lottery a few years ago. This has been very successful but we are always keen to welcome new members. Most people who live in the village will have use of the church at some time, whether for ‘hatches’, ‘ matches’ or ‘dispatches’ - some just want to see a beautiful historic building well maintained.
The principle is that everyone who joins pays £3 a month by bank standing order (or an annual cheque of £36 or a quarterly cheque of £9 made payable to ‘Almeley PCC’) and then a certain proportion of the income is distributed quarterly as prize money.
You have a flutter with a good chance of winning and the satisfaction of contributing to a worthy cause; and most importantly the future of our church is secured for the centuries to come.
There are four draws each year, and the prize money at the moment is:
March - 1st £100, 2nd £50 3rd £25;
June - 1st £100, 2nd £50 3rd £25;
August - 1st £100, 2nd £50 3rd £2; and
December - 1st £100, 2nd £50, 3rd £25,
We would remind existing members of the Lottery that annual subscriptions are due by the beginning of March for the following year.
Please contact Elizabeth Shayler (01544 340746) or Sheila Finlayson 01544 327980 for further information.
Our sincere thanks to all who support us.
